Beecher Carlson’s 2021 Power Brokers

February 24, 2021

Congratulations to John Costello, Sarah Griffith, Jane Hahn, Sara Kane, Peter Kranz, and Amanda Lania on being named 2021 Power Brokers by Risk & Insurance.

John Costello, Assistant Vice President and Property Broker in Beecher Carlson’s National Property Practice, was named Power Broker in the Construction category. John was recognized for his work to develop a quoting tool in Excel that streamlined processes for a global master builder’s risk program. “I always say, ‘conventional approaches give you conventional results.’ And so, we always really push our brokers to think outside the box,” said Steve Upshaw, vice president of risk management at Equity Residential. “John Costello is really great at that. … He’s a young guy. He’s only been in the industry for less than 10 years, but he is just one of these guys who really kind of gets it.”

Sarah Griffith, Southeast Executive Liability Practice Leader, was named Power Broker in the Transportation category. Less than 45 days before a renewal, a Securities Class Action suit arose that would implicate the policy. Sarah was able to rework and renegotiate the entire renewal program before the deadline. “We did not miss a beat throughout one of the most challenging executive lines renewal [our company] has ever faced,” the client said. “Throughout the renewal process, Sarah kept us informed of market changes and helped us better focus our attention on issues which assisted us in obtaining the most favorable results.”

Jane Hahn, Managing Director, was recognized as a Power Broker in the Specialty category. Jane was recognized for her expanded marketing efforts to approximately 40 U.S. and London insurers on behalf of a client that resulted in a successful program. “I’ve worked with Jane for a number of years and this is the first time we’ve asked her to do a full market check. Due to a CEO change at my company, we thought we may have to go to RFP, but obviously Jane was able to avoid that distraction by impressing not only myself with her thorough work, but also my CEO,” the client said.

Sara Kane, a Senior Vice President in the Global Energy Practice, was named Power Broker in the Renewable Energy Category. Even as COVID-19 brought challenges to the industry, Sara was able to build and maintain strong relationships with clients and carriers to deliver best-in-class service. “…She stayed involved with our team as we navigated a complicated situation with potential workmanship claims and provided invaluable and commercially-minded guidance for our team,” said one financial executive.

Pete Kranz, Captive Practice Leader, is a two-time Power Broker winner, having also won in 2020. Pete has overseen the management of Cummins’ captive for 10 years, helping the company establish and grow its structure. “Peter has helped to manage our captive very successfully and guide us along the way, helping us to insure more of our own risks and rely less on the traditional market, especially during these hardening times,” said Sally Leyes, managing director of global risk at Cummins.

Amanda Lania, Assistant Vice President in the Global Energy Practice, was named Power Broker in the Renewable Energy category for the third year in a row. Amanda was recognized for her work to help a client renew coverage during a time when environmental hazards were prevalent. “Amanda guided us through a very difficult property renewal process this year. While we were not able to go through our traditional renewal process, Amanda worked with us in renewing through a captive program with our vendor. The process went more smoothly than I thought it would, and Amanda’s insight was invaluable,” said the client.
